Accessibility

Accessibility
Web accessibility is more than just good practice. For many companies, organisations, including governments worldwide, it is now a legal requirement.

Over 10% of the online population has a disability (750 million people worldwide). According to iCAN, people with disabilities have a discretionary income of more than £100 billion pounds (UK Sterling). So ask yourself if your business can afford to ignore accessibility.

Making your online business accessible to all individuals, including those with disabilities, demonstrates good human awareness, reduces the risk of legal battles, costly settlements, unfavourable publicity and will help you comply with soon to be regulated guidelines and best practices.

Non-compliance with guidelines, worldwide legislation and best practices, discriminates against people with disabilities who should be able to access your online business, and if not, can negatively impact your corporate brand.

Below is a selection of the guidelines we have complied with:

  • Provide a text equivalent for every non text element (e.g. via "alt", "longdesc", or in element content). This includes images, graphical representations of text such as symbols, image map regions, animations (e.g. animated gifs).
  • Ensure that all information conveyed with colour is also available without colour.
  • Organise documents so they may be read without style sheets. For example, when an html document is rendered without associated style sheets, it must still be possible to read the document.
  • Clearly identify the target of each link.
  • Create a logical tab order through links, form controls and objects.
  • Provide keyboard shortcuts to important links, form controls and groups of form controls.
